A modern and customer-oriented new construction was planned for the Central Hospital of South Karelia. Several artworks were realised in the interiors and exteriors of the new hospital. Art defines a considerable part of the hospital’s general appearance and spatial solutions. The artworks were integrated as a natural part of the architecture and the interior design. As an aid in this was used the Art Formula developed by Partanen & Lamusuo Ltd. which facilitates the implementation of art in a hospital milieu. The locations, the size category and the materials used, for example, were predefined for artworks in the Art Formula. The final design, appearance and realisation of the artworks were commissioned to an artist who were selected separately.

The art project gave many different artists the opportunity to participate in the design of the appearance of the hospital spaces. The Art Formula is a new kind of method of planning and implementing art in public spaces. It aims at creating for the customer a different and experiential visiting experience in the hospital. The art found around you takes your thoughts away from the hospital environment, relaxes the visitor and quickens the healing process.
