The recipients of the national percentage culture award granted by the City of Jyväskylä have been selected
Every two years, the City of Jyväskylä gives a percentage culture prize to a person or company that has significantly promoted the realization and awareness of percentage culture in Finland. The award will now be presented for the third time and will be announced on 8.12.2021 In Jyväskylä.
The aim of the award is to increase national awareness of the cooperation between art, events and construction, and to emphasize the importance of art and culture in everyday living and in the design of the built environment. In Jyväskylä's percentage culture principle, one percent of the residential area sales revenue and construction costs are directed to culture, art and events. In this way, it is possible to implement and support both art acquisitions and performing arts and events.
Three candidates were selected for the final
Media artist Charles Sandison, environmental artist and architect Kaisa Berry and design and architecture company Partanen & Lamusuo Ltd were selected for the final of the percentage culture award. The merits of the final trio highlighted the public works created in Finland in recent years, which are also of international interest. Each finalist has their own strengths to be selected as the recipient of the 2021 Percent Culture Award.
- Art as part of construction is already an established way, although there are different operating and financing models. In the selection of the finalists, attention has been paid to the different backgrounds of the candidates, both in terms of content and methods of operation, says Mari Aholainen, Culture Manager of the City of Jyväskylä. - Charles Sandison has renewed the tradition of visual art in construction with digital solutions. Kaisa Berry's distinctiveness is represented by environmental art and landscape architecture. Berry lectures at Aalto University and works as an art consultant in built environment projects. Partanen & Lamusuo Ltd's work often combines design, art and architecture, and they have expanded their operations for example to cultural tours, Aholainen characterizes the candidates.
The winner of the percentage culture award will be decided by an award jury consisting of Petra Havu, the Counselor for Culture from the Ministry of Education and Culture, Kimmo Levä, Director General of the National Gallery, Henri Terho, Specialist at the Art Promotion Center and the City of Jyväskylä is represented by Mayor Timo Koivisto, Business Director Anne Sandelin and Culture Manager Mari Aholainen.
The value of the prize is 5,000 euros and it is funded by Jyväskylän Kankaan kehitys Oy. The company is owned by Skanska Talonrakennus Oy, YIT Suomi Oy and Jyväs-Parkki Oy. In addition, the winner will be given a numbered ceramic sculpture by artist Tommi Toija. The award has previously been given to Frei Zimmer Oy (2017) and artist Kaarina Kaikkonen (2019).
