Empathetic architecture is in harmony with the surrounding world

Is empathetic, harmonious architecture dull and colorless? Under no circumstances. Harmonious architecture matches the environment and purpose of use: it can be calming, but also luxurious, experiential and it creates wow experiences.

"Empathy is wanting to understand the rest of the world around you. Through understanding, you can create a harmonious entity, that brings joy to people", sums up the artist-architect couple Partanen & Lamusuo.

Empathetic architectural design takes into account other buildings and the environment in which the building or extension is planned. Through empathy, a complete whole is achieved, where the buildings fit together and with nature.

Empathetic design respects the locality and the history of the built environment: the historical layers of the area are taken into account in the design of the new building, thus preserving the uniqueness of the environment. In empathic design, for example, a facade or a work of art can be inspired by the history of the area.

The role of nature in empathic design

Nature has a strong position in Partanen & Lamusuo's projects. Nature can be seen in the material choices, the design language, and the adaptation of the buildings to their surroundings. The natural elements of the land can be incorporated into the building. A great example of the incorporation of the local environment is seen in the lake spa project in Rantasalmi, Hotel & Spa Resort Järvisydän.

"The rock on the grounds of Järvisydän was taken as part of the spa. The water flows into the spa from the heart of the lake. As surface materials, sunken logs and natural stones from the area were used. It's as if Järvisydän has always been there," describes Lamusuo.

"In the heart of the lake, “Wow” - architecture is combined with functionality. It was of great importance to us to shape Järvisydän into its surroundings and landscape. We wanted to preserve the unique spirit of the place," Partanen continues.

Wood and natural stone are ecological material choices that bring nature into architecture and the built environment. Nature can be brought close to people with the help of large windows, terraces, and vegetation.

"Glass facades allow natural light and unhindered entry while opening up a view of the surrounding landscape, creating the experience of the continuation of the outdoor space inside. Aino and Alvar Aalto also used harmony with nature in their design projects. This affinity produces positive feelings", Partanen & Lamusuo explain.
